Es wurde untersucht, inwiefern Maßnahmen wie versatile Erzeuger (z. B. Biogasanlagen oder ein Gaskraftwerk) und Speicher (z. B. Pumpspeicherwerk) den Selbstversorgungsanteil erhöhen können, welche Kosten und Erlöse sich für die area ergeben und wie viel Treibhausgas-Emissionen eingespart werden können.

Es wurde ermittelt, dass der Strombedarf bereits 2010 zu 15 %durch Strom aus EE-Anlagen gedeckt wurde.

Darüber hinaus verfügt die SUN-Region über mehr Flächen- bzw. Erzeugungspotenziale für den Ausbau von EE als für das angestrebte Ziel notwendig sind.

Im maximalen Ausbauszenario, in dem alle vorhandenen Flächenpotenziale genutzt werden, kann die Stromerzeugung aus EE zu 157 % zur Deckung des Strombedarfs beitragen.
